The push of crowdfunding and incubators can be essential to your Startup

Manuela Pipino & Davide Marin

The fact that startups need to look for funding to be able to survive is one of the first rules that those who decide to start a business venture learn. That was exactly the case of Manuela and Davide, who we spoke to not long ago about their experience as entrepreneurs and who now explain to us how, thanks to a crowdfunding campaign, they were able to reach a large target with their ICT project, 3D printers available to the everyday person.

Difficult beginnings

A first successful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo made them realize their idea could potentially become a business. Their project took off after having received a first help from the Italian incubator H-Farm Ventures which provided them with some initial support and contacts. Funding their project came from the help of Indiegogo, where they presented their second campaign. That success enabled them to earn a subsidy which marked a before and after in their working life: thanks to those economic benefits, they decided to leave the previous full time jobs and undertake their own startup.

For Manuela and her business partner, the incubator’s help was important to create the start-up, which enabled them to launch their product on the market and reach their target clients with their own strengths. They’re now working with the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, which is helping them with economic resources, education and materials.

Pipino explains to us that investing in new technologies in Italy is still complicated due to the economic situation which still frightens people. After receiving the first small financial support from the incubator they have been able to stay afloat thanks to the benefits received after their crowdfunding campaign. “The market is growing at a fast pace, and it’s something that could scare us, but thanks to the positive reception that our campaign had and the public’s response we’ve been encouraged to continue to move forward.”

Public response

Everything depends on the public’s response, so it’s important that your target clients positively value your product. If that’s not the case, it may not be the right moment to launch your product, or that your idea might not actually be that good.

Crowdfunding your startup project is very interesting at different levels: – Off course, to raise money; – Meet your market; – Start to create a brand or product; – More important create a community around your startup The choise of the platorm and the campaign strategy is a very critical issue. Don’t start without correctly preparing your campaign.

So true- crowdfunding can definitely help create a community, but it’s important to have a base for that community before launching into crowdfunding, otherwise you might just hear crickets…

Off course a campaign doesn’t start when you open your project page on the crowdfunding platform. You need to pre-launch your communication with social media presence, landing page, website, blogging… According to the level of money you want to get, you absolutely need to validate around 20-30% of the donation/investment (for instance by finding big donateurs) before to start. Studies show that if you don’t reach 30% within the first two weeks, your campaign has high probability to fail.
